The exhaust manifold fits poorly; leaks with one combined intake port on cyls 2 & 3, and out exhaust port#4 despite new gasket & retorque @ 20ft-lbs middle studs and 30ft-lbs on outer studs. Is the manifold or head warped?
In the same vein, I have access to a rebuilt Chev 292 which is in near perfect shape, and with much less worn 4sp transmission. How hard would it be to fit this engine in the old GMC?

The side motor mounts are the biggest challenge and I think you'd find a fair bit of other tinkering. Take your manifolds off (bolted together), and have them planed at a machine shop. The GMC 270 is a good motor, I'd stick with it if the manifold is the only problem...even though the 292 is also a very good motor.
Are you sure it's a 270? The standard engine was a 248, I'm not sure if the 270 was available in the 2-ton line. | | |

When I rebuilt it I had to fabricate some exhaust valves and completely redid the head. It ran like a clock for a while then sprang this manifold leak that Ihaven't been able to fix. I'll try milling the manifolds - Thanks! | | |
