I'm new here and am considering buying my first old truck. My friend has a truck in his barn that has been there since the mid '70's. I am almost certain it is a '53 3800, flatbed, dually grain truck. It has no rust on it and appears to be very sound. We have not looked into what it will take to get it running. We have no idea how much I should pay for the truck. It has the original green paint on it.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Curtis Orton

I paid 500 for my 49 4400. It has some rust but it runs and drives. You can see pictures at Click here to see some pictures you can use this as a comparrison. I would guedd arround 800 would be fair. There are many people here that know alot more than I do so maybe they can help. might put a post in the big bolt section.

Thanks for the reply. It almost looks identical to yours, even the same green color.

Welcome to the 'bolt huthip cool

I'm no expert but if it has everything on it and it truly did run when they parked it, I might even go a little higher, possibly $800.

Mind you, I'm a gal & have incurable stovebolt disease so I am not always as rational as I could be regarding these trucks grin

Got pix ?

Hi huthip welcome to the 'bolt!

I'm a guy and I suffer from the disease too!(I'm never rational!) wink

As '49 said, you could try posting this in the Big Bolts section of the forum.

It'll reach the guys "in the know" and give you a clearer idea on what to pay.

pix will help too.

Good luck

If the metal has truly NO rust and its as good as I seem to think it may be from his description I'd be surprised if it isn't worth a fair dollar of $1000 to $1200.

IF its possible to try and get it running I think that would be the wise thing to do. Then a fair price would be negotiable. If you buy it "as is, where is" then they get cheaper as menitoned above.

I just paid $900 for my 53 4400. Its about the same outside as Hayhauler's. But the seat is mint. It runs an drives great just have to work on lights to get it on the road.

I just bought a 70' GMC for $900. it didn't have a bed and some pretty bad rust in the fender corners and a 350 and 350 auto tranny. I would say that a bigger truck that has no rust, or is complete, $900-$1000 sounds fair, escpecially if you dont get the engine running.
