Hi all, getting into the expensive part of our rebuild, the paint. Went and talked to our local automotive paint store and talked to the guy for about 15 min explaining what I was trying to accomplish.
According to him i should sandblast and then prime with epoxy primer immediately. Then when I'm ready to paint, lay down urethane primer and then by paint and base coat. I asked a what a quart of epoxy primer costs he told me about $100 and that includes the thinner (so I'll have 2 quart to spray) and the most popular gun he sells, an HPLV runs about $170 bucks and I can get another setup to allow me to prime & paint with one gun. He says that in between the epoxy primer and urethane primer will be my bondo. And he told me that I wont need to sand in between coats just spray

Another thought: I asked about my sheet metal. I said that I will be hiring this out, low psi and a lot of glass beads, and let them spray the epoxy primer. He claims that it doesn't matter what brand of primer they spray. Any will work with the rest of the process.

Any thoughts am I in a good direction or a complete idiot, constructive critism is allowed

BTW, this is on my sheet metal and any little odds and ends I can blast in my cabinet.

Also after doing more research on the internet i realized the is HVLP & HPLV what is the difference.

Umm did he say "sand blast" or tell you wall nut, bead blast, or soda or some other medium sand blasting isn't the best of choices for body panels it does produce heat and can warp some panels "not saying it will always" but you do run a risk
far as sanding between coat most definately the newer paints today are very touchy and require absolute smoothness, older laquers were alittle more forgiving but due to the EPA those are a thing of the past now if your going with a dark color make sure your body work is perfect dark colors will magnifie any inperfections

I talked to the local sandblast shop, the owner that is, and he told me that he would personally do my panels with low air pressure and a high density of beads thus not warping the panels. He is someone i've known for awhile. I didn't just go to a random shop.

I have been know to be all wet before, but I don't think there is any gun that is designated High-Pressure-Low-Volume! There is a HVLP gun, but I sure can figure who would want a HPLV gun!

I think this is a mistake, and it's all over the net! Can you believe everything you read, I don't know. If I were spraying something, and time was money, I sure wouldn't want something that used lots of pressure but applied little paint.

That makes sense, I would never buy something thinking only of the internet. Some acronyms just run together. However this LINK says HPLV so who knows?
