Hi Bolters,

I was under my recently acquired '49 5 window today to check and fill my differntial and found a bolt on top of the driver's side axle. It opens to reveal what appears to be a fill hole of some sort. Does anyone know what this is for?

Thanks,
Rich

If you can blow air through it, it's a breather to keep heated gear lube from expanding and blowing out the seals.

I believe it's a vent hole. It allows air to escape when the gears are spining and oil is thrown around. The volumn of air changes. This way there is no pressure on seals. Kind of like our ........never mind. Cecil........

The breather needs to be clear, or you will pressurize the differential when the lube gets warm and blow out the seals. It is threaded, 1/4" NPT if I remember. It should come out for cleaning.

Thanks everyone! Mystery solved. I would never have figured that out on my own.
