Need to know if I'll need help. Any information would be helpful. Thanks. | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | 52GMC9300,
I saw a similar question recently. They provided a nice link, take a look!

At 544 lbs that 261 is a bit lighter than a 216/235 at 615-630 lbs.
Most likely the 248 engine is 600 lbs +/- 50 lbs (depending on fluids and attached parts)?

Short answer, yes. | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 338 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 338 | fyi...3 guys to offload a full 51 235 w/ clutch and bellhousing intact from the rear of a 2550 hd pick up. old mechanics trick...place motor down on an old used tire, maybe lifted by a few stacked boards. wider is better. holds motor nice and stops the crushing of the pan.

Set the engine stand up and literally drive the engine off the truck. | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | Rent a cherry picker, it won't break the bank and will keep from breaking your back.

Most of the engine weight listed by Chevrolet for the 216 and early (pre 1955?) usually include the bellhousing, clutch, and flywheel; the later engine weights do not include those parts. That probably explains the 70 to 85 lb difference between the 261 and 216 in the list of weights. While I was assembling a 261 a couple of years ago I made a pretty good effort to weigh all of the parts as I went along, shown in this link. I helped another person carry a bare, empty 302 block and it was quite heavy. The 248 is the same basic casting, and the head and internal guts probably add another 200 lbs.
