I have a rebuild 235 out of a 1955. I have it in my 57 truck now, but I can't seem to get the shaft from the tranny to go all the way into the motor. The cheap plastic line up tool I got with the reman clutch & pressure plate seems to go in, but the tranny shaft won't go all the way in. headscratch I have the tranny that came out of my truck (1957 3200)and the tranny I got with the rebuilt motor. I can't get either one to fit all the way in. Anyone have this problem or a guess what it is? Is there more than one size diameter pilot bearing? Could the clutch kit I got from FLAPS be wrong?

3 speed or 4 speed? Sometimes it helps to turn the output shaft a little bit to line it up with the disc. Some shaking may make the difference as well. Usually the rear of the transmission is hanging to far down. This causes the pilot shaft to hit the pilot bearing/bushing. Try lifting the tail of the transmission and pushing it in.

Another trick is to use 1/2 inch 13 thread rod on the top 2 holes. You can then suck the transmission into place with some 1/2 inch 13 nuts.

Each time that I have put my 4 speed back in, it always hangs up just short of being all the way in. I usually give it a good shove from behind with my feet and in she goes.

If it is only 1/2 to 3/4 in. to going in, it is probably not lined up quite right with the plastic tool. Hook up the clutch linkage & have someone step on the clutch while you put bsome pressure on it. If that is the case it will slide right in.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I can't seem to get it right, so I am having a mechanic take a look at it & I'll have him do it so I don't break something. I was going to have him do my brakes anyway, so I'll let him play with the tranny too.

If you are having that much trouble there may be something wrong with the pilot bushing. It could be dinged up or possibly mfg undersize. Some of these parts are not always made to specs.

Before you take it to a mechanic, pull the clutch and check to see if the disk slides onto the input shaft correctly. Not likely, but you may have a bad disk or the wrong disk.

Just a thought.
