ARE GAS SHOCKS BETTER THAN HYDRAULIC ON A 50 CHEVY
3100 ?

i think the gas shocks are the only thing that are ava any more ,and the ride is better .

They are all hydraulic. The gas charged shocks have a gas chamber instead of venting to the air. They are better shocks but like Old Dog says thats about the only way they come now.

Glad I saw this thread 'cause I had a question about the shocks on my '50 half ton. Pulled the bed out in preparation for new bed wood and took a good look at the shocks. I swear they look like they could have been the original shocks!! Rusted holes in the top of one of them, rust on the nuts, etc. Anyway, I decided that I want to replace them with new ones. Like most of the time when I go to the parts store for a part none of the books go back as far as our AD's, so can anyone tell me if there is a specific shock brand and reorder # for my '50 or will I have to substitute something close? I know Monroe is a good brand....any others??

My 2Cents: Take the old ones off and measure, then go buy some new shocks. I bought my from Pete and Jakes:

You could also check Gabriel or Monroe online. They had some very useful info that may give you some insight. I research on the puter before I went to the FLAPS.And it still took a couple of trips. I changed from lever to tube. If you need any other info just ask. Have fun and good luck

I have the Monroe catalog in my hands right now, no listing for rears for a '50. It does have a listing for the fronts, though. what I would suggest is to remove them, and measure the lengths, both at full compression and full extension, that will ensure that the replacements will go the full travel of the suspension. You wil also need to tell them the type of mounting on the ends. If you get me the dimensions, I can see what Monroe has listed, with both Monroe and Sears numbers.

Napa has the monroe shocks for your truck. I just bought fronts and rears. What a difference they made. They had to be ordered, but they had them in two days.

Might be the easiest way to deal with this since I know now that they carry them to fit.

I'll compare data and price against what Longbox comes up with in the Sears line. Does Monroe make shocks for Sears??

Yes. They are the same shocks, just have a different part number.

Spot,

Napa's rear shocks number is 94004, and they were $16.99 each.

Napa's front shocks number is 5826, and they were $25.49 each.

They had the rears, but had to order the fronts. The Napa parts guy said Monroe makes all there shocks.

the ones I had on my 52 half-ton were us,, when I got the ones from auto-zone, they were gabriel's and made in Mexico.. they seem to lighter but they seem to work ok...these were for the front.

FYI.....

Stopped by an O'Reiley auto parts house today and all they could find was a front shock for my 1950 1/2 ton. Didn't have a reorder # for the rears, so they told me it wasn't available from MONROE, which is the brand they sell.

I'll be going to NAPA since Mo2cyl gave me their reorder #'s for both front and rear.

Check out you local napa dealer bud,i walked in,told them i had a'57 chevy 1/2 ton,i picked the shocks up the next day!
