The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 235 only runs with choke closed.

I just aquired a 1949 Chevy 1 ton. Has a 235 circa 1960 w/ single barrel. Only starts and runs when choke is fully closed. When choke is opened it sound like it will run better but then dies. Gas tank has been steamed, good clean fuel filter. Is this a carb problem (dirty, needs rebuld?) or could it be timing, dwell, etc.? Thanks for any replies

Yes, your carb may need a rebuild. You might want to check to see if your idle mixture screw has any effect and an intake leak is definitely a possibility. Make sure carb is tight on intake and intake is tight to head. Bill.
