| | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 34 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 34 | i have a 55 second series that im converting from a 235 to a late model 350 v8 and i aquired a steel bell housing that i was told that i needed for my switch i was told it was from a 67-72 chevy truck and i whent to auto parts and got a brand new starter for it well i ordered it for a 69 chevy truck 350 v8 and thought well it should work well it dont bolt up at all has anyone else had this problem or know of what year starter i need to get it for etc part no# anything for a correct starter????? my bell housing i have a is part no# 3925505

The top one generally comes in from theback. If not he sold you the wrong starter.

I'm guessing that it was 68, when they switched from the SM420 to SM465, and also changed the input retainer hole size. I had my 292 drilled and tapped for the 3 bolt starters that mount to the block. When I tried to put a 72 starter in it wouldn't fit. I ended up using the original starter. I'd suggest you find a shop that rebuilds starters, they will have the answer.
There may also be a difference in the number of teeth on the flywheel.

| | | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 34 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 34 | i think i found my anwser the bell housing i got is steel 67-71 or so and i baught the new starter from autozone today and got it for a 69 model 350 v8 with 3 speed trans and bellhousing come to fnd out the bell housing takes a older starter i came to find out that a starter for a 68 chevy 327 is the exact starter for the 3925505 bell housing i have and a friend of mine says long as i run a 168 tooth flywheel sence this starter isgoing to crank a 350 instead of a 327 then he said it should work fine and long as its for a 3 speed manel trans . | | |
