I have a 1944 GMC CCKW Duece and 1/2. The truck broke down due to a fuel problem and during the repeated starting, one of the teeth in the starter bendix let go. When I had it off, I noticed the ring gear teeth were pretty chewed up. I got it going but very shortly there was a loud grinding noise coming from the starter area.

I need to find a new flywheel. Jim Carter has the bendix but no complete starter unit. The truck is parked at a WWII Museum where we were doing a display. I need to take whatever the simplest solution will be to the truck. I know I can get the ring gear separate but it will take an oven to separate it from the flywheel. I can get just the bendix but I don't want to find out the motor is shot too. It is a 200 mile round trip.

Heat the ring gear with yer torch with a rosebud tip and you can pop it off same to replace it...have never used an oven and don't know of anyone else who has either in the last 40 yrs...

As for the starter, put it in a vice and power it up to check the motor, and while it's apart for a new bendix change the brushes if they're short...

My main mechanic shop, Mid-Texas Battery and Electric in Midland, Texas rebuilds starters and generators. They also do a great deal of work with old m-151 jeeps so they may have a part. Sams Surplus, Stanton Texas has a lot of old military parts. Smith Diesel Service in Valera, Texas has about 50 deuces1/2 sitting in his yard so he might have parts. 411 ought to be able to get phone numbers.

Either way, you are gonna have to pull the flywheel if you can get a replacement or not.
Get it off,Heat it up EVENLY with a torch and the ring gear will come right off like butter.
FLIP the gear and WALLA new teeth on the Lead edge.
Let it Cool NATURALLY, even if it takes till the next day.
Regards,
Steve Sr.
