I have a chance to pick up a complete truck bed/side/etc from a 1948 1/2 ton Chevrolet at a good price. Would it fit my 1946 1/2 ton gmc. I want to replace the utility body. Is there a major appearance difference between the 46 and 48 bed/sides/etc?

Hi Jeff, firstly welcome.

I'm not 100% sure but I think there is very little or no difference between the two, other than fenders.(Where there's a will there's a way!)
Hopefully someone more knowledgable will chime in to confirm our suspicions!
You could also contact these guys to check....
I hope this helps.

It depends on if the '48 is an Art Deco bed or one from an AD. Technically the AD series came out in late '47, but since titles were issued the year the truck was sold at that point I'm not sure which series that '48 would be. If its an Art Deco bed it will fit, but the AD bed is completely new- the dimensions are not the same.

AD truck beds are wider than '41-'46 beds.

I looked up the Master Parts Catalog 1929-1950, it has the same part numbers for the bed sides for 1941-1950. So it appears as though your inexpensive bedsides should work. The front bed panel is a different part number, and as suggested by steppenwood, probably wider. The 1946 GMC bed would be steel, not wood, but....
Wait just a minute. What type of utility bed are you attempting to get rid of?
I may be interested in accruing it if it is period correct.
Please send me a PM about your utility body.

Jeff...I told you someone more knowledgable than I would chime in.
And you might have a home for the utility body!

Hey Jeff, What I would do is get the bed you are lookin at (if the price is right) and get a new front panel and tailgate from Mar-K. I think you can still get a tail gate for a 46 for about 80 bucks. The 48 bed sides are going to be the same as the 46.

well jeff i can't say for sure on your model but i have a 39 with a 53 bed on it other than the bed over lapping the lower sheet metal by a couple of inches on each side "which looks just fine on mine" the fenders line up with the running boards perfectly "and yes i know i will get boo's and hisses from the purist but on my budget i can't afford an original 39 bed" and the stubbyer fenders to me look better.
