| | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 79 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 79 | Nope, it won't hurt anything if you don't use dishwashing detergent, or water. The detergent will cause the casting to floresce. (That's that white powdery stuff that looks like mold.)
What it also won't do is get the varnish and other residue out of the ports and channels.
Better to spend a few bucks on a can of carb cleaner than risk messing up the carb body.

You might have to put half of the carb stuff in at a time, but you can still get everything cleaned properly without having to spend lots of money for a big can. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 309 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 309 | I was planning on cleaning and rebuilding the Zenith carb on my '51 GMC, but when I started the preliminary disassembly, I rapidly realized that it needed a complete teardown. A lot of those old carbs require some special tools to pull them completely apart. I found a great rebuilder who's been doing it for 30 years and has all the correct tools. For $145 I had a carburetor that looked like NOS and worked fine. Looking back, I'm glad I made the decision I did.
