Has anyone out there tried to install rack and pinion steering onto an AD truck? I have an IFS from a 72 C-10 on my 53 3100, and was just thinking of the possiblities of changing the box out for rack and pinion, perhaps from a late model Buick or Olds? Can this be done and is it worth the time and effort?

You'll need one from a Camaro or Firebird, as most of the other late model cars with R&P are rear steer. You might consider Corvette also. Keep in mind, those R&P units are metric, so you will need outer tie rods with metric threads to work with them.

A Durango/Dakota and Ford Exploder are also good donors for the AD and actually fit better than the GM F-body.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm a true Chevy man. It never crossed my mind that a Mopar or F&%d part might work better.

The durango rack is almost a perfect width because the inner tie rod lengths are shorter. The Camaro need to have the inner tie rods swapped with a shorter set.

To be honest. The steering racks are either ZF or TRW and purchased by all OEM's. GM purchases the racks just like Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Honda, etc.
