Coming home this afternoon I heard what I thought was the water pump bearing going out on my 235. Turned out I lost the rubber out of my balancer, which had been rebuilt about 10 years back. Guess I turned 4,500 rpm one too many times.

I have located a used balancer locally, will go pick it up tomorrow night. Guess if I have to go anywhere tomorrow I will have to ride a bike! eek

The rubber discs actually came out or tore up? You had the damper rebuilt by Damper Dudes or the Damper Doc?
It's my opinion having a damper rebuilt by those guys may not be the answer. The original rubber discs were a certain density tuned for a certain RPM.Is there anyway of knowing the silicone rubber used in rebuilding is tuned properly?

Rebuilt by damper dudes. I believe they are the same outfit as the damper doc. Had about 20,000 miles on the rebuild. The rubber is gone. Haven't pulled it yet, will do that when it quits raining. Here's a pic.

Got a similar problem with the modified 302 GMC in my 37 Chevy truck. The 302 damper I'm using is like a Chevy V-8,an iron ring bonded to a hub with rubber, the outer ring had come loose and spun around.I talked to a small time damper rebuilder,he'll re do it,but I'm not sure it's the best way. Performance dampers,ATI,Fluiddamper small block models will fit with some mods, but the pulley situation and damper size is a problem,no room otherwords.

Here's a shot of the pieces.

Don't know what went wrong first, but it sure tore the fasteners out of the pulley. I checked the water pump and alternator, but they both turn freely.

Probably a case of too much torsional vibration for the damper? ya think? Flywheel bolts still tight?

I hope they are. I used both loctite and the sheet metal retainers on them. Engine idles nice and smooth, as near as I can tell. I'm not too worried about it, since my driving is down to about a tank of gas a month and I don't have get in the 70 mph rat race to go to work anymore.
