I'm getting about discouraged with trying to whip my old eng into shape...it seems problem after problem..I am about ready to buy a re-man eng since I have already had the tranny and drive line re-built and a new clutch...anybody care to give me an idea what to expect to pay for one or any reputable outfits near St Aug Fl I could maybe get one without getting gouged for shipping costs?

Didn't you just get the head rebuilt? If so, I would work with what you have now. More than likely you will have to bore it, more than likely your crank is OK. Probably pay to buy an engine kit with the cam, lifters and timing chain as well as pistons, rings, bearings and gaskets. I don't know what a kit is now, and also don't know what machine work costs in your neck of the woods but I bet it would be far cheaper to rebuild what you have, plus from what I have seen from some rebuilders you will have a better engine.

There is a remanufactured 250 long block still in plastic and crate in the Knoxville,TN "Bargain Mart" for $500.00. Included is another 250 for parts.

I don't know crabby...the new head hasn't seemed to help much at all..it is still smoking like a freight train...maybe even worse than before and running rough...it was running better before I changed the head I think but when I got it off I could see a couple burnt valves so I know it had seen better days...at this point I am about ready to roll this thing into the ocean...tearing that engine down is something I would look forward to about as much as a double root canal...I am just about ready to pay somebody to do an r&r on that engine if I could get one and a mech that wouldn't result in a second mortgage...

I never expected the problems I have had with this thing...it is far and away the most troublesome one I have ever fooled with...
it seems every little job or part replacement has been wrong or had some kind of major glitch and I am nowhere near as knowledgeable as I should be for somebody trying to do stuff this involved...been cussing worse than in my Navy days and conteplating a gallon jug of wild turkey...this aggravation is way too much from something that was supposed to be a bonding project for the kid and I...

Just try to find a used 250 or 230 engine for that runs nice for $75.00 and rip the new head of your old one and junk the rest. simple answer.

Lot of people have wonderful 250 engines in cars and trucks but end up replacing them with a V8 instead for extra power.

Ohh and by the way GM 250 inline engines dont have a timing chain.

Jasper,s is a good reman engine & has an excellant warranty. They have warehouses in many large cities so you probably can pick it up. They have a websight & a toll free number.

Just looked at Jasper and a few other sites...bout fell off my chair on the cost before adding shipping and core..

I wonder if anybody has any suggestions on getting long/short blocks from our local parts places ie Napa,discount auto,carquest ect...

Many times putting a new or rebuilt head on an old engine without a hone/bore/ringjob will cause increased oil consumption. Find a good running 250 for cheap and save your $ for rebuilding the rest of your engine as time and cash allow. Be patient and keep looking! Good Luck, you will find one!!!

On eBay they have starting as little as $50bucks and gone for as little as $100. Don't know the shape and most don't sell cause nobody wants to ship or drive to pick them up. while others listed in the eBay store are $700-900.+

thanks everybody, and gary I think I know what you mean about the oil...just my guess but the increased efficiency of the new head seems to cause even worse blowby at the rings...however after a couple more tries I think I have the valves dialed in just about right now and my search for a long block/crate motor at a reasonable price has just about concluded, but I am going to have to milk what I have now for a bit longer while I put back some bucks for the R&R eng job...
best longblock price to my door from reputable outfit is just shy of a grand...the shipping and core are hard to get around...even buying it from the local Discount autos builders they are going to incorporate shipping into it...
