| | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 7 | hi went to look at a 1952 chassis cab guy said it was a 3 ton ex fire tanker the info on the plate was- model 1783 - serial 1178301233- engine g29345- body 22- trim 394- paint 131 - GM canada. on a nother plate was max weight 16000lbs any ideas if this is the right info for this truck thanks Rob | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | welcome to the garage Rob - the CDN numbering setup is totally different then the US system, so you won't find much on the details, but that number will be right if the plate hasn't been changed .... the first number being 1 should say it's a 1951 [probably first registered in 52], the next 4 are the series and model 17 83, the rest is the unit sequence number ... yes, the model would be a cab&chassis but would be 2.5T for 16000#

1 = 1951
17 = series code 3 ton, largest Chevy truck produced this year
83 = model code 179" wheelbase
01233 = regular production number
engine number G29345 = G.M.C. 248 c.i.d. engine
If this truck was a 1950 it would have been a Maple leaf 3 ton, but the Maple leaf designation stopped in 1950. Parts are not too hard to find [no harder than most other 58 year old vehicles], as I said it has a G.M.C. engine in it not a Chevy, this is a full precision bearinged engine, unlike it's Chevy cousin of the same year. what area are you in? the praries are littered with old farm trucks, should be able to find a decent 1/2T to 5T 50's truck easy
