I purchased a 1998 3/4 chevy for the vortec 5.7 and 4l80E to swap it into my 1957 LCF. Was planning on using a manual transmission but was able to pick up this truck reasonably so I decided lets give her a whirl. Stay tuned, I may wish I didn't go there but it should be worth a try given my dislike of carbed engines. Time to go to the library and get service manuals / wiring diagrams.

Well I may have picked a winner so to speak. I checked compression on the new purchase, 175 - 190 psi, removed a valve cover and no sludge, in fact too clean for 225K miles. I suspect it has been rebuilt / replaced at some point but time will tell.

If you have the complete vehicle, use the computer and wiring from it. Not really that bad of a job.

Yes, the plan is to use the original harness, computer, transmission, etc. I have yet to do a vortec swap and came into this truck for the same money as a TBI donor vehicle. I have swapped TBI's just not vortecs. I have to figure out who I know that works as a GM tech so I can get the wiring diagrams to see what needs to go and what needs to stay. There is someone local here in Missouri that reprograms the PCM's to take out the vats and at the same time he will program axle ratio / tire size and get rid of the emissions stuff.

I managed to get the trans out today, engine ready to go except for mount bolts and 2 rounded exhaust nuts.

With the 4l80E that should also solve the low gear ratio problems and get a better cruising rpm.
