Can anyone tell me where the vin # location is on a 36 chevy low cab 1/2 ton truck? If anyone has a photo of what it should look like, that whould also be a big help. I hear that back then the vin number was the same as the number on the engine. Trouble is I have no engine but the 350 Chevy that is in it. If you build the truck from scratch and don't have a vin, how do you go about getting one? Do I go to dmv and tell them I am building a custom street rod.

This is discussed a lot. Doing a search using VIN in the search box will get you hours of reading. The short answer when you don't have the original engine is to contact your state licensing agency for their process in resolving the issue. Every state has a way of resolving the problem. Many are similar but every state is at least a bit different. Get your info from the horses' mouth.

In '36 there are only two spots that have numbers. The firewall has an aluminum plate which has factory data like model, style, color and trim. The VIN sould be on a small metal plate located next to the battery hole on the floor. At least thats where every '36 I've had it located. Most of the time they are in really bad condition or they are gone.

On my 36 low cab I bought a title for the same and I bought a vin tag off of ebay, I bought a set of number stamps from Horrible Freight (harbor Freight) and it was done.. In MD it is impossible to get a reconstructed title or resurrect an old vin number and title. On the internet there are also sites that cater to lost and titles.. Do you have a title with the truck??
