I have a 1949 3100 which I want to paint dark green.


Which color is it ? Forester Green or Seacrest Green ?

Definitly Forester green, Seacrest green is the lighter color.

Forester Green is at the bottom left of the chart at the tcpglobal link you posted above.

Here are Ditzler (now PPG) chips and numbers (51-54). Forester Green was used between 1947-1952 (and, maybe earlier).

So I can assume this is not a correct color on a 1949 ?

That's nowhere near as dark as any Seacrest Green I've seen. I know computer monitors aren't good for accurately displaying color but Seacrest Green on the chips I have is much darker and more like a natural dark leaf green as seen in the other linkz here.

Forester Green IS very dark and unless the photo of the chip was taken under controlled lighting conditions and color corrected, and you have a calibrated monitor you can't tell anything about color on a computer.

While there may be some variation in color on the digital photos, this color is Seacrest Green.
If you look at the before pictures,you can see it is a light green.
The paint formula was gotten by shooting the original color (cowl) with Dupont's spectrophotometer.and was a dead on match.

Your truck's exterior color does look more like Seacrest Green ("before" color) - Forester green is a very dark green and Seacrest Green is a much lighter green (I had a set of doors that were original Seacrest Green).

Ocean Green (introduced in 1953) is a little lighter than Seacrest Green (1947-1952).

First of all let me say that your truck is beautiful... if mine turns out half as good as yours I'll be thrilled, but that color isn't Seacrest Green seen on any chip book from that era.

HERE'S Seacrest Green from a DuPont book

I plan to paint mine Seacrest Green too and I've seen chip books from DuPont, Ditzler and Martin Semour and they are all much more like a healthy grass green. Yours looks more like Ocean Green as seen in the chips book page linked to earlier.

Not sure how yours was originally painted that color and I'm not saying that it's not a perfect match to the color on your cowl, but I'm sure that if you find a color book you'll see that it's not Seacrest Green as specified for a '51 Chevrolet truck.

But like I sad your truck is great and you are to applauded for your work.

Like Woody said, never assume the color you see on your computer monitor is "correct". There are far too many possible variants (video drivers & display settings, scanner settings ,etc.). Also don't assume that you can print what you see on your monitor and get the exact same color out of your printer for the same reasons plus printer drivers & settings.

And, never assume that a 50+ year old color chip sheet is really what it looked like 50+ years ago (unless it has been carefully stored over all those years).

The best color chips I have found have been in hardly used, original, Truck Data Books, but I still would not bet that the colors are true.

Nonetheless, if you have a 1949 Chevrolet standard-cab and color truck with original paint, you should be able to tell the lighter blue (Windsor) from the darker blue (Mariner) and the lighter green (Seacrest) from the darker green (Forester).

Once you chosen that color and have paint mixed to match it (from a color match of a protected part, such as a protected place in the engine compartment; or, you use an old code/formula from a chip sheet; or, you use an offset modern formula), no one knows how "true" the resultant color is.

I have the Dupont color book with the chips you show,however, if you look closely at this http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2942767050103393295AsRZZP?vhost=good-timespicture in my Webshots photos,it is the firewall and cowl of the truck before I did anything to it.
I admit, it looks like Ocean Green in the photos, but comparing them in person, I found that it was much closer to Seacrest.

My 54 is painted Juniper Green, which is almost identical to Seacrest Green. I'm wanting something darker. I really like Oliver/Hart Parr green.

Very true but a vehicle that's been sitting in the elements for 50+ years is far less true to the original color. The best thing about a page from a book is that it has the formulas which will get you as close as you're going to get.

well, Forester Green it is, and the PPG dealer says they can mix it in a single stage poly


hopefully I'll get to that point soon

still no clear answer on the interior,is the entire inside(behind the seat and the dash supposed to be Champagne?
