Well I just found out why I was having so much trouble getting the starter to run reliably... I pulled the cover off of the end of the starter to find a pile of rust, bushings, and bushing springs fall out. I have no idea how water got trapped in there but the starter is in dire need of a rebuild or possibly a replacement. Is there any place that sells a rebuild kit for a 12v foot-stomp starter (in a 55 2nd series with a 235ci engine)? I am on a rather tight budget with the truck and I'd rather not spend $130 on a new starter or $50-70 for someone else to rebuild the starter when I could do it myself. Worst comes to worst I may just look around for a old starter out of the junkyard...

Check your flaps or Napa, I know they have at least a little of what you need to rebuild your starter.

Check out www.classicgenerator.com You'll find it under the Stovebolt "Links" under electrical. I bought a starter rebuild kit from them, seems ok but I haven't had time to install it yet. The small package of necessary parts were delivered in a matter of days.

Make sure that you clean up the back plate. Sand blasting is the best. It is quite common for rusty starters to lose contact at the brush holders.
