I pulled the cover off of the end of the starter to find a pile of rust, bushings, and bushing springs fall out. I have no idea how water got trapped in there but the starter is in dire need of a rebuild or possibly a replacement. Is there any place that sells a rebuild kit for a 12v foot-stomp starter (in a 55 2nd series with a 235ci engine)? I am on a rather tight budget with the truck and I'd rather not spend $130 on a new starter or $50-70 for someone else to rebuild the starter when I could do it myself. Worst comes to worst I may just look around for a old starter out of the junkyard...

I bought a starter rebuild kit from them, seems ok but I haven't had time to install it yet. The small package of necessary parts were delivered in a matter of days. Sand blasting is the best. It is quite common for rusty starters to lose contact at the brush holders. | | |
