I have a 235 that did not have a thrust plate gasket when I tore it down, but the engine gasket set I bought says it has a gasket for the thrust plate. My question is is it needed? and how is it placed on the thrust plate? and is it paper or cork, what does it look like, and what does it do? Thanks in advance.

| | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 | I don't remember using one when I rebuilt my 235 years ago. The thrust plate limits the camshaft endshake and is enclosed by the timing cover, so there wouldn't be any purpose for a gasket.
Samantha | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | What looks like a gasket is a paper shim to align the gears. The shop manual gives instructions on checking this. Alignment also affects cam timing.
