Well it's time... the need has arisen and we need some air tools. I've got a few questions: 1) What PSI/stage/brand compressor do you recommend. I'll only be using tools for short periods of time and not at the same time. My grandfather who owned a full fledged shop suggested a 5 HP or more, 150 PSI, 2 stage compressor. This seemed like a little to much. 2) What kind of tools should we get? I certainly need a nibbler, grinder, wrench, air file. Any others?

I'd listen to Grandpa. Die grinders and DA sanders are air hogs. You eventually may want to get a blast cabinet and they also use a fair amount of air. An air compressor is kind of like a welder--a big one can do a small job but a small one can't do a big job.

For the type of work you are going to do get as big a compresser in 2 Stage as you can aford. I have a 2 Stage and it's 165 PSI. MAX. 5HP. 220 Volt rated @ 18.8 CFM @90 PSI. 60 Gal. Vertial Tank. Running a HF. Sand Blaster I can take this 2 stage down if I push it hard but havent had any problem with air tools yet. The 2 Stage is a great unit from HF. contrary to some who think they put out junk tools. For home there is no need to spend $2500.00 - $3000.00 on a compressor for home use unless you will use it day in and day out. I have had this compressor 2 years and had a bad compressor when it was brand new but I think it was not properly torked on the rod bearing at the factory. They sent out a new unit and got in in 2 days. When I offered to send the other back they said keep it for parts down the line. I HAVE HAD ZERO PROBLEMS SINCE! I have worked the snot out of it in 2 years being retired. Almost forgot I gave $599.00 plus tax out the door and I have got my money out of it in saved labor.

In my humble opinion,you can never go too big on a compressor.I bought a 5 Hp two stage Ingersol Rand on a 80 gal. tank. It has done a good job for me.I found the best deals for me were at Tractor Supply.Course I am sure you will recieve many different opinions here.
