My wife's grand father just gave me a 59 BelAir and a 60 Biscayne. Both cars have 3 speed column shifted transmissions with electric overdrives. Will one of these type transmissions fit in my 62 Stepside and work with the truck's 3 speed column shifter? How do these overdrives work? Are there any good websites for them? Thanks.

Ans. Yes. Yes. Yes. I have a '62 3sp+od with a floor mounted shifter, a '57 truck 3.90 rear in my '49 3100. They are an excellent tranny. They do not have a synchro 1st gear, so just momentarily shift to 2nd, (clutch depressed, of course), to use the 2nd sychros to shift into 1st without the grinding. The 1st time you start out at a stop light you will realize what the previous statement means.

As for websites, look around in our Links section or do a search on this site.

Yes, and I think it's a direct swap, without even a driveshaft change. Be sure to scavenge all the electrical bits and pieces, the relay, the kickdown switch on the throttle linkage, and the wire harness. The relay, in particular, is becoming very difficult to find. Some people have devised methods of running without the relay, but if the complete system is available, it makes sense to set it up the way it was intended. The governor switch built into the transmission is designed to prevent OD operation below about 30 MPH, depending on the rear axle ratio.
