Found old sealed metal-top cardboard can showing part number "GM" "5184531" "Fuel Pump". Is there any way to backtrace this number to find which of his old project cars it would fit? Can's about 4-in tall, 5-in diameter. Picture on can sure doesn't look like any fuel pump I've seen--has what I think is a ring of protruding hex-socket bolt heads in what looks like a flange. Teach me, folks. By the way, Chevy house just laughed and wanted to open it up. Moral: label spare parts. | | |

Seriously, I'll look in my Chevy Master Parts book tonight and see if I can find anything. I'll report tomorrow if no one else comes up with something.

That part number does not show up in my 29-54 Chevy Master Parts book. Guess that means it's not for a Chevy from those years. 'Course, GM made lots of other models than Chevies. Good luck on your quest for info.

A general web search yielded a Detroit diesel fuel pump with that part number. Don't know if that applies here.

I bought a '63 vintage 292 [first year] as a core, and saw that type of fuel pump on it. I inquired at some parts houses and they could get a kit to rebuild it, but the kit cost more than simply upgrading to the '67-'68 disposable type.
Every 25 years I like to rebuild that 292 just for GP

I'm still in the process of researching but it seems like this is the correct Part Number for a Fuel Pump for a GM 2-53 Detroit Diesel.
I have a 2-53 Detroit in my original '59 John Deere 435.
