I have a 1954 chevy 1/2 ton with the original 235 engine in it. I have never had any problems with the engine and it is a very strong and dependable engine. I want to get the most horsepower out of it by rebuilding it and and adding performance parts!! I am new with this and want any information that i can get on tips to rebuild the engine, what performance parts to add and machine work to be done for the highest performance at a reasonable cost! any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Get Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual by Leo Santucci. Available online.

Don't expect "reasonable cost" when going for performance on an inline Chevy 6.

Find a machine shop with olds guys who are experienced at rebuilding these engines. Better yet send it out to one of the custom rebuilders. Young guys and 95% of the shops don't know jack at rebuilding these, so don't get in a hurry and do lots of homework. There are some really good (much better than me)guys in here so ask lots of questions and Good Luck.

Santucci's book is written for the late model sixes, not the old 235.

Your best improvement is to get a 261. But, the 235 will do since you have it.
Full race cam
Cast Fenton headers
New intake and carbs, dual Holley Webers are a decent setup
Electronic ignition
Balance the engine
Shave and port the head, 848 head is highest compression.

I'm sure I missed something. Here's some shot's of my friends 261, it's around 250 hp.

Yes, Santucci's book is written for the next generation of inlines but it contains a world of useful information that anyone building a Chevy 6 ought to be aware of.

250 hp from a 261? Leo Sanducci started drag racing with a 235 then a 261,Leo said to me, an all out drag 261 ,not even remotely streetable, very narrow power band, puts out 270 hp at 6000 rpm.Fred, I think your friend needs to write a book on 261's grin
