I would like to run it off a Vector battery start jumper, the kind you can plug in the wall and jump start your battery and carry it around. The guy at the FLAPS said forget it as the 12 volt Warn wench will not run off a batter jump starter. He said that it would not trigger the "demand"??? If you clip the cables to together from a wench or a truck battery how does the portable jump starter know the difference in types of demand? Would not the wench cause a "demand" like starting the truck????? I know, you mean "winch". Generally, winches draw a lot of power - some as much as a starter motor - you didn't tell us how many amps the one you have draws. Those portable booster batteries are only good for a minute or so of engine cranking.

Electrical things can be weird. The battery acts like a big sponge so when a charger is attached it senses this load...plus when you hit the starter on the vehicle being jumped, the draw is quite dramatic...several hundred amps at least.
Maybe this is the load the portable jump needs to see before it does something internal or electronic, I don't know. What kind of load does a winch motor see when you kick it in?
Sometimes the fellas at the parts store do know who's on first as they are right where the action happens. Did you 'Google' this question...lots of info out in cyberland.

OK..the jumper states 400 amp starting. I think I will give the Warn Winch people a call and see what they say. We just wanted to make it easier on my UNK we thought he could just plug and play.
