I want to swap my 4 speed 410(straight cut gear) out of my 1946 Stock Chevy 1/2 ton with a sm420 (synchro-mesh) out of a 1950 donor. The 420 is 2 inches longer, so some modifications are necessary. Anyone out there done this before? I would like to keep the torque-tube setup. All replies are welcome.

I've heard of it being done, but never done it myself. Keep in mind that you need to change or modify the bellhousing because the hole isn't the same size. There might be enough slack in the telescoping joint of the driveshaft to use it, or you could just swap to an AD rear end.

I have done it and am pleased with the results. 4 on the floor is right. You will need a different bell housing that will accommodate the pedals. Got mine through Jim Carter. I also had to get a starter that fit the new bell housing and the existing flywheel.

I have an open drive shaft so I had my front drive shaft shortened. I don't have anything to help on the torque tube other than swap it out. You could also get a better gear for the diff. if you did this.

I just changed a SM 420 with a torque tube end to an open shaft end with a couple of Novak parts. They may be able to help you on this, at least with parts.
