Ok folks,

The 41 has the original Carter W-1. Yesterday I was pulling out of the driveway and it died on me. Fuel pouring from the carb. It used to weep a little but nothing much. I tapped the side of the carb a few times with a spanner and that solved it. I suspect it was a stuck float. I've been putting off rebuilding the carb basically because I haven't done one before. Mind you there have been a few thimgs that I hadn't done until I got this old Chev that I managed with you guys help to sort out ok.

Anyway rebuild time. Anything to watch out for. Any tips. I intend taking plenty of photos as I strip it down, for reference later. As always guys I'd appreciate any input.

Cheers

Bob

Can't help with that carb, but do figure on soaking it overnight in carburetor cleaner.

I just did my Rochester single barrel off of my 1951 Chevy and it was a piece of cake. The factory manual was a great resource and I took plenty of pictures, but I didn't end up needing them. It's a pretty straight forward deal. Take everything apart, soak and clean, replace the wear items with the stuff that comes with a rebuild kit and put it all back together.

The soak in the cleaner softens the deposits in the passages, but does not remove them. Use a dedicated dip-type carburetor cleaner. Gasoline, or other solvents aren't strong enough. Do a HOT-water rinse to neutralize the cleaner, and then use high-pressure air and a fine-tipped blow gun to blow LOTS of air through every passageway. The air dislodges the crud and blows it away. One of my carburetion instructors from General Motors used to say, "Put 55 gallons of air through every hole!"

[censored] so I shouldn't have any problem getting the carb passageways clean. That is as long as I remember to use the right one!

Cheers

Did my first one two weeks ago. Went just like urbanrefugee said, but I DID use the pictures. One thing that's been said here before, do it in a short time frame so you don't forget what went where. grin You should have fun too.

Update guys,

I stripped the carb down last night, cleaned everything, hot water rinse, blew everything through with the compressor and started the rebuild this afternoon. I'm just about to set the float level but have a question. Carb is the original Carter W-1. I have a workshop manual which says the float level should be 1/2 inch and I have a drivers manual for a 1.5 ton Australian army Chev which says that the float level on the W-1 should be 3/8 inch. This 41 was originally an Australian army truck. I know that the Carter W-1 was used for a long time. Did different models have different float levels and if so how do I tell which model I've got.

Thanks folks

Bob

Carter W1 float settings are: float level 1/2", drop is 1+1/4". Fuel regulators are also a big help between the pump and carb, 2+1/2 lbs is plenty. When you finish up put a drop or two of oil down the screw hole where the acc pump arm rotates.
