Hi. I recently purchased a '54 3600 and the engine is running rough, the plugs are fouled and the engine stalls often. I have changed the plugs and think the carberator needs rebuilt. The distributor looks good. Any other thoughts or place to look?

I would also like to keep the 235, but increase performance. Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Set the points and timing, if you haven't already. It's amazing the difference a couple o' thou' will make!
Rebuilding the carb is always a good idea if you think it's been a while. If you want to mod, there are several tech tips regarding pumping up the 235. If you are doing a full rebuild and can bore it out, you can get almost 200hp out of it, and it should still be reliable. Manifolds, headers, head porting, etc. can all help with power.
Keep sking questions and you will get answers, but don't be shy about using the search engine here. Sometimes it is slow, but the results are worth it.

Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice)
\'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run.
My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.

Check your points. Gap should be .015 used, .019 new. The carb, Rochester one barrel, has some problems. The horn warps, causing the upper seal to leak, and the throttle body wears from the shaft, causing vacuum leaks. Both are fixable, but take more than throwing a kit in the carb.

If your 235 has solid lifters you may want to set the valves also

If you want to modify the engine. Patrick and Phillip are a great source of information.

Thank you for all the very helpful info. I plan on starting as soon as I am in Texas (where the truck is located) next time. Unfortunately, that will not be until Thanksgiving. Guess that means I have lots of time to work out a plan!
