Hello,
I'm thinking about going with an Edelbrock performer on my 350 in my '85 'burb. Questions: how much CFM? Do I need an intake manifold too? Will I have to change the distributor? What about the computer controls? How do I go about setting this up? Does anyone have links to any articles/books/instructions for this type of thing? Thanks for all the tips and advice!

If the engine is stock, a 500 to 600 cfm carb will be plenty. As far as the intake manifold is concerned, an aftermarket intake will give you a little more power and perhaps slightly better fuel mileage, but it is not necessary that you change the manifold. You will not have to change the distributor or computer controls. Edelbrock makes carbs and intakes that are compatable with computer controlled vehicles (i think).

I just put an Edelbrock 600 on my friends 86 K-10 with a 350/700R4. It has the stock intake and ignition. It runs great. It's a pretty straight forward swap.

Spend the extra $$$ and get the Edelbrock Quadra jet carb they will get better fuel milage than the AFB type and will be a direct bolt on replacement for your stock carb assuming you have a Q jet on it now.

If you have a o-drive trans. you must get the trans. cable hooked up & adjusted correctly or the trans. will be short lived. You will need to change the dist. to one with mechanical advance & vacuum advance. The computer needs feedback from the carb. to work the spark advance.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

If you go with the Qjet style Edelbrock you can use the stock trans cable/bracket etc. Its patterned after the late model Qjet from GM. Brian

If you install this 4bbl you will need to run headers and free flow exhaust in order to achieve the motors full potential.

But this is a stovebolt forum. There are thousands of Chevy 350 hop up sites on the net.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Tab, I'll check out those links you posted. I'm sorry to "pollute" (pun intended!) the stovebolt pages with questions about POS mid-80's smallblocks. However, I'll never feel guilty about the pollution that comes from my vehicle, or the poor fuel economy, because it's MY car and MY money, and MY choice.
Regards,
Tyler
