I want to make sure my trans. is in good shape before driving much. however, my manual (on CD) is not too helpful.

First I need to identify which trans. I have. It is a manual 4spd on the floor of my 66 Chevy truck (w/292). Is there only one of these? That would be too easy.

Next, I need to find out how to check the fluid level. I'm assuming there's a plug somewhere on the top kinda like the drain plug on the bottom. BTW, I've got a huge 'protective' layer of grease ALL OVER it. I really need to make sure it is up to snuff before I drive it to the car wash to clean it off. Thanks all.

Oh, and once I find the fill plug, what's the procedure for checking the level? I'm used to having a dipstick to check it. No, I'm not the dipstick. :rolleyes: Then on the other hand, maybe I am.

That transmission is probably the SM-420, which was used about 3 days past forever in the 3/4 and 1-ton trucks, and several other applications. There will be a pipe plug about halfway up the passenger's side of the case that's both the fill point, and the level plug. Remove the plug, and, if necessary, add 90 weight gear oil until the level is even with the bottom of the hole. Reinstall the plug, and drive on.
