I know that I am going to get a lot of redirects to the tech notes at the home page, but I have beenthrough all of the websites listed to answer the following question to no satisfactory avail. Is there someone rally know, edgable out there who can pont me in the right direction or give me some partial information on the following block numbers? F1223NE behind distributor on possible 235, CON2LCO3 3860817 with OM under it on block. Block has a clock face dot patternwith a pointer at 9 o'clock which supposably only happened at Saginaw, MI plant. This engine is a freebee that I want to put in my 50 Chevy pickup, but I would like to know what year and maybe model of vehicle etc. it came from. All the charts I am reading seem contradictory. I know asking this will anoy some of you, but somebody out there must have a more informed knowledge of how to read these numbers.

I'm coming up with Flint as the plant, but the NE code doesn't come up in my book. I'm certainthat it's a '54-'62 engine, could be a passenger engine, '61/'62 (my book only covers truck after '60).

Thanks for that information, it is a start. I pulled the plugs and checked to see if it was free today. Yeehaw! it turns fine. will an oil pan from a 216 fit?

I don't think it will. The 216 has a very different oiling system, with part of it being in the pan itself.

Is it a 235 (or 261)? I do not see 3860817 as the casting number for any 235 or 261. 3850817 is listed as the casting number for a 230-250 block, much different. Post some pictures if there is confusion or uncertainty.

I think I have it figured out. It's a '63/'64 230. Hoyt's post got thinking to check the later codes, as I only looked at the 235 codes originally.

If it is a 230 instead of a 235, will it inter change reasonably easy with a 216 like the 235s or 261s will? What kind of history (reason for different displacement etc. Does anyone know about this engine? What car or truck was it installed in? By the way, thanks so much for your help everyone. i never would have found that answer. Where did you get the information?

Nothing will interchange with 216-235. That is all new design for 1963 and it has 7 maim bearings instead of 4 that a 235 had.

I also noticed that the harmonic balancerdid not have any kind of nut to spin the crank with and the water pump was running a 3/8 pulley. Is this setup going to set in the engine compartment like the 235 and clear the radiator? Will motor mounts be convertable like I have read about for a 235? The engine came with no fly wheel or bendex o any kind (probably off of an automatic.) Will the 216 bell housing clutch, fly wheel bolt up? It seems odd that I have never read of anyone installing a 230 in and Advanced Design before.

Usually when it is done (including 250's and 292's), they change out the tranny also. Different motor mount locations are necessary, and I believe the radiator has to be moved forward.

In other words, it's a lot more difficult, but possible.

I've been reading on the internet and others talk of a bellhousing ring mount that supports the tranny and engine in the 50 Advanced Design. Will the 230 bolt up to this tranny and bellhousing? I know about the side versus front mount situation. I'm wondering if the 230 is only compatable with a newr bellh ousing and if so, does this include a T-5?
