I am still looking to convert the t-5 output pulse to drive a DC motor. I would have to amplify the output to drive the motor but this looks like it may work. Any thoughts. I really don't want to spend the $300 for the cable-x deal. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 238 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 238 | I'm not an electronics expert, but I think that you might struggle to get the exactly linear speed response you'd need from a DC motor as the voltage increases. You'd need this to get an accurate speedo reading throughout the range rather than at just one point.
If you can't adapt the T5 you have to a gear driven speedo setup, it should be possible to rig up a lightweight belt drive for the speedo using the the transmission slip yoke as a driving pulley. Lots of early European cars used this type of setup to drive a speedo cable via a driven pulley mounted alongside the transmission. A lightweight round section belt is all you'd need, it's not really transmitting any power.
Stuart.

That may be an option to play with. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 60 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 60 | I'm going to use a programmable electric speedometer in place of my old speedometer. You could waste a lot of time just getting a speedometer to read right. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 | I like the look of the gauges that came with the truck. They just scream 1950's design. I got two of the chips to play with if it looks like it isn't going to pan out I will just order the cable-x. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | If you put a speedo gear on the shaft you have to change the rear houseing also. You can use one from a T-4 by changing the detent plate. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though.
