The only one they had was a lot smaller diameter than the original and will not work as it just moves around in the "cut out" that is formed inside the housing. Anyone ever run into this, and if so, where do I get one?

Can't say if they were originally like that or it's a result of aftermarket part # consolidation. But, as long as the t'stat O.D. is large enough to cover the hole completely, it won't matter if it's a loose fit. It'll work, or at least it always has for me.

Also Never Ever trust a parts store like Kragen or Napa, I have run into too many aftermarket parts for my classics that have either broke in the first two weeks or dint work to begin with. im sure others already know this haha. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 153 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 153 | Actually, the old thermostat was so much larger in diameter, that the new "standard size" can move far enough to one side, that a quater of the hole is exposed! I've done searches on e-bay etc., and have not found one yet.......still looking.
The original t-stat that I removed had what appeared to be a "fiber" outer ring that took up that extra diameter, but it was so deteriorated, that it just crumbled when I took it out. Surely somebody out there has seen one of these???????

Some not all 292 thermostats are two pieces. You can separate the bell from the heat sensor and put a standard thermostat on top of it. There is also a second gasket about a 1/4 in. thick that sits on top of the thermostat and seals the top of the housing. Let me know if you need a picture. I don't know that I have a part number unless there is one on the thermostat.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 275 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 275 | My 292 is a real early one,'63 or '64, has the 7/16" flywheel bolts & uses a huge (1" I think) bypass hose on the t-stat housing. The NAPA P/N's for my t-stat are 532080 = 180 deg. & 532060 = 160 deg. The gasket # is 35063. Hope this helps. You most definitely want one that covers the entire hole, even if its loose & 'offset'.
