I have a rebuilt engine. It runs but hesitates when pushing down on the accelerator. Doesn't run well until warm. Which takes a long time. And other problems. But starts and runs.

What are the correct sequences to get the timing and carburetor set properly and coordinated?

Start with a search of this forum. There is lots of info on this topic.
Has anybody thought of building a technical FAQ page for this site?
It could include links to definitive, informative threads covering most of the oft-asked questions about timing, tuning, performance, swapping, upgrades, what-kind-of-rust-prevention, who has what part, etc.

I know there are lots of articles in the tech tips, but this could be right at the top of the forums, and might head off some of the repeat topics that are covered extensively already.

Octane set at zero. Then hook up the light and set the ball with the indicator. Check.

The stumbling on acceleration sounds like a bad accelerator pump on the carb to me. A kit in the carb should take care of that. As for setting timing you can do a search and get hours of reading. Since I don't like standing on my head trying to get the right viewing angle to set it "correctly" I simply adjust to fastest idle with the octane adjuster set at 0. Good luck.
