It usually isn't the steering box, it could be any one or several of the tie rod ends, drag link, ball joints (if you have them), spring shackles (if you have leaf springs), king pins (if you have them), or wheel bearings. Its usually pretty obvious. If the play is that bad its likely that all of the front suspension is worn.

The linkage type would be the factory option. They are notorious for getting a lot of slop in the control valve. Like 4onfloor says get someone to move the wheel back & forth as you watch were the slop is. That control valve is available as a reman.

Reminds me of the 52 Olds I traded for once. The play in the wheel was more like 12:00 to 6:00 and I had to drive it 25 miles home. The guy should have thrown in a roll of toilet paper!
