Hello all, After some work and storm clean up I've got my truck running Woot!
Tho it seems to be having a little trouble.
So heres what happens after driving for a few minutes it starts to want to stall out with the gas in, take out the gas and it helps it out but will slowly start to die. but will start right back up but its not long before it will happen again.
any help is always much appreciated

First rule: Make and Model of engine and year of truck.

Type of carburetor and recent work you have done on the engine.

How long has it sat before you got it running?

What work have you done to correct the problem?

1961 chevrolet apache 10 long bed fleetside, straight 6 235
Rochester GM carburetor With oil bath filter (ill try to get more info on that)
Things done to the engine gas tank cleaned and fuel lines, new water pump, cleaned distributor,oil. I'm not sure how long it didn't run for but maybe 9years

Fuel pump, clogged filter, stuck or clogged needle valve. Your not getting enough gas to keep up with the demand. After 9 years of sitting the carb probably needs a rebuild anyway. It is a cheap and easy rebuild.

My money is on the fuel pump.

also check for fuel tank venting. I get alot of motorcycles with the same symptoms, it's often a stuck vent in the gas cap. Any ways it definately sound like a fuel flow problem.

Check fuel filter again, possible bad fuel pump or bad carb. Take the top off of the carb and spray some carb cleaner in there and wipe it out. Could be a sticking float, dried out accelerator pump or crud settled in the bowl. Best to rebuild the carburetor anyways.

Does it run at idle?

What happens if you feed gas by hand while it is running?

I took it out for a drive and first time round died after going around the block about 1/2 mile, when I started it back up I got abit of black smoke
and after letting it warm up for a few min(now running with the choke all the way in) and loosing the gas cap up it seems to run around the block ok so gonna try a longer trip ( but not farther then i can push :P )

If it will only run when the choke is in the closed position, I would check for vacuum leaks. The old vacuum lines may be brittle, cracked or missing all together. Block off all holes from the intake manifold and carburetor.

OK I'll check the lines, to clarify when i say that the choke is all the way in I mean to the dash so the paddle in the carb is open not sure if that changes your statement

That statement does change it a little. If it is just cold running, leave the choke closed a little and eventually open the choke after it warms up. Does your manifold have a heat riser? If so, check to make sure that it is free moving and not stuck. This is what helps your engine run during cold start-up.
