Ive never used any of the mini starters but wonder about them myself. I still like the high torgue GM starters. They are cheap & plentiful & easy to work on.

These starters interchange. On the 'bay, they only come up when I search for 409 starters.
I work on Harleys, so I mess with nippondenso starters all the time, and I really like them. We have little pushrod like solenoid actuators so you can bump them around by pushing on the end of the solnoid housing. Might be handy when adjusting valves or other work under the hood.

the bellhousing for the eight takes has the starter mount.
Anywat, check it out on e-bay. Search for 348 or 409 starter. The seller is qtip43, he has a starting bid of 149.00. Last time I went to the pomona swap meet, I asked all the start people, and they said they could get 'em in hitachi or nippondenso style.
the hitachi go for around $85.00, njppodensos $160.00

The mini-starters are Japanese-made, and they use a planetary gear reduction to let the motor armature run at higher speed than a direct drive starter. They sound funny, but they do a pretty good job of cranking the engine. I don't think I've ever seen one that has a bellhousing mount, but there's no reason it couldn't be set up that way.

Around here, old Chevy parts can't be had at your local parts stores, anymore. Everything I try to get for my Chevies is special order. I can get Hitachi and Nippondeso parts easily.
