Motorcycles are notorious for having fuel drain out of the tank, through the carbs, and into the cylinders when the petcock is left open. Then, when you go to start you find that you have hydrolocked a cylinder and bent a rod, or just flooded the crankcase with gasoline.
You could probably scrounge a vacuum operated petcock from a bike- those shut off the gas when the engine is shut down.
