Do I have to use babbit bearings on my 47 216 or could I use newer rods with insearts?

You can have a machine shop make the rods accept bearings.

As stated, you can have the rods machined to accept insert bearings. I had mine done that way and they turned out really nice. If you are not doing a complete tear down, you may want to buy a pair of standard, and a pair of .001" under for fitting. With the inserts, you no longer use the shims.
