Hi all,

Is it ok to mount the engine with the bellhousing on the engine stand or is it a big no.

Any answers are appreciated

Of course you can. I've done it before. I had my 235 mounted to the engine stand from the bellhousing. You might have to get a bit inventive with the bolting up. I used all-thread when I did it. I had the top bolts on the engine block itself with all thread and the bottom bolts through the bellhousing. If you think about it, the all thread has a pulling force on it. And it held up a 700 pound engine just fine.

It depends on the stand. Several years ago a couple of students in the school auto shop where I teach were rebuilding a 235, and they had removed it from the stand, mounted the flywheel, clutch, and bellhousing, and re-mounted it on the same stand. The next day, the engine, with stand attached tipped forward and hit a kid's foot on the way down. It broke a few bones and took 13 stitches to close up the cuts it caused. He was wearing heavy work shoes, not steel toes, but heavy leather, which prevented more serious injuries, or possibly losing some toes.

If you choose to mount the engine that way, you'll need to fabricate some type of front support unless you've got a stand that's purpose-built for an I-6 engine.

Ganesh,

Read carefully all of what Jerry posted.

What weight stand do you have?

Guys,

I really dont know my engine stand capacity, but I had previously mounted 235 motor with out issues, now with bellhousing the tipping in the front is the issue. I probably have to do something like this guy did

Thanks Guys

While that bracket makes it look good, it doesn't really address the overbalance issue, unless a caster wheel is added under the extender. Otherwise, it looks like it would work well.

I mounted a GMC 228 with bell housing and clutch on a stand once. It worked fine until I tried to move it and then, much like Jerry stated, it fell. I was lucky enough to be out of the way so I didn't get hurt.

I was going through same thoughts, but the HF stand with the extention was just a "thought" for use with bellhousing. Glad I sent post I sent, the best advice I recieved is to remove the bell housing and flywheel and mount to block. May still keep added support, but will keep engine over the stands wheels and centered as best as possible.

I have my 235 mounted to and engine stand without the bell housing, the six sets higher on the stand due to the bolt pattern then a V8 would thus it is not as stable. The bellhousing would allow the six to set lower but again it would be 6 inches longer too, my set up is ok but when you move the stand you can feel it being top and front heavy, I fell the extra froward weight would be a lot to manage and not to safe

my question is why would you want to. at the point of putting the bell housing on you should not need to flip the engine over any more so why not just build the little stand that is in the tech tips. i built the engine on an engine stand then moved it down to the dolly stand and put the clutch and bell housing on.

yes but be careful, that really puts the heavy load out further- I did on mine and put a big jack stand underneath the engine mount at the end away from the engine stand to help balance the weight.

I wouldn't take the chance, what are you going to do with the engine ? Rebuild, storage, painting it ? I built the engine dolly to store my 216,it's easy to roll around and is very stable. Here is a link to it .
