He has done in 2.5 weeks what the last guy did in 2 years. Now it's time for paint. We have mixed the color red for 1942 (or at least what PPG say's is the match) but it has an orange overtone. The info I have seen on the colors available for 1942 on a truck show 2 reds. Nether color match the origional color found inside the door. What am I missing here?

I suspect that while the formula may be available for the correct color, the hue of the tints used may have changed slightly over the years which would result in what you are finding. It's also possible that the truck has been repainted since new to a slightly different color. The best bet would be to disregard the formula and custom match the existing paint on the door jamb.

Thanks guys, you have been a real help. I have looked in the gallery at the reds on 42's and it looks like some of them have that red/orange color. (some are red) I will bet it is as you have stated the codes don't exactly match anymore due to the content of the paint.

As for the sample you found on your truck, red pigments are more likely to deteriorate over time. If you have a formula, mix to that formula or find a color you like and mix to that.

And as it gassed out it is truly red red red. I love it Certain times of the day it changes color. It's cool. So stay away from the orange and get the red you want. My 2 cents.

Trust me, after 35 years in the commercial art and photograhy I could show you 10 individual color swatches that you would call red but if I laid them out side-by-side you would see that they were all different. If you are deciding on a color (any color) to paint your truck have the paint mixed to match a swatch from a color chart... and look at the colors in daylight. Fluorescent lights give off a green color light and incandescence give off a brownish color light. Any comments on that one? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | When you mix all the colors together dont you get black? No, actually black is the absence of all color. I warned you guys that this is esoteric, but did you listen? Noooooo... | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 687 | The absence of all color should be clear.

Any comments on that one? That's why colors have formulas and numbers. What is the drivers name?

Always best to look at the color sample in the sunlight.
I had a '77 Chevy that was factory painted "Firethorne Red". It looked great out in natural lighting, it had a pink tone to it in the garage under fluorescent lights. | | |
