If not what changes would need to be made. Is the additional power worth the effort, or would a 350 V8 be a better swap? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 72 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 72 | It won't be a bolt in swap. As for the better swap between the 292 and the 350, I'd give the 292 the nod. But that's just my two cents. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 | you will not regret the extra work once your done | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 385 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 385 | I was going to put a 292 into my 3800, but after getting the 235 running, I probably made a bad decision and got rid of the 292.
The 292 is actually very close to the same size as the 235 because it uses thin wall castings. The one big difference between the 292 and most other Chevy 6s is that the 292 has staggered motor mounts. The one on the passenger's side is farther forward that the one on the driver's side. Not such a big deal since you will probably be putting in new motor mounts anyway. (To get the engine to fit correctly.)
I think that the 292 is a good swap since it doesn't the weaknesses of the 230/250, and it has the same torque rating as a 350.
