I need a id plate (the one that has the serial number thats mounted on the driver door post) for my 52 3/4 ton pickup. I see that most of the vendors carry replacement id plates but some list it for only the 1/2ton. Im not going for original with my truck so I could care less if the load capacity and engine hp and rpm do not match my truck, but other than that is there any problems with using a plate for a 1/2 ton. Besides jim carters and classic parts of america, where else can I get a id plate for a 52.

If you're concerned about the legality it's best to direct your questions to your state DMV. They're the ones you need to please.

well I have the title for this truck, and it is in my name, otherwise I don't think anyone would ever know the difference unless the 3/4 ton plates are completely different. Can anyone shed some light on this? Or know where to get a plate made for a 3/4 ton?

Otherwise if the plates are exactly the same aside from weight, I would think it wouldn't much matter as long as the serial/vin number was there.

Also the truck was retitled by the previous owner using the body number and not the engine number as he had swapped out the 216.

I believe they are the same. You just stamp in the numbers.

I got an ID plate from the Truck Shop (www.truckandcarshop.com) for my '53. Bought a stamp set from Harbor Freight and stamped the numbers that were on the title onto the plate. The title to my truck must've been lost at some point as the number is not a factory number but it really doesn't matter to me, the number on the title now matches the number on the doorpost and the DMV here in WA is happy.

I think there's some confusion here. By ID plate, do you mean the one that has the GVW and engine horsepower on it? If so, that is only a data plate, and has nothing to do with vehicle identification. That plate is the smaller, usually stainless, plate that is mounted up higher on the door opening. That one is the one with the body/chassis number on it, and is the important one to the DMV. Now as far as a date/id plate goes, since you're not concerned with 100% originality, there are companies that make id plates for hot rods that you can enter your own info on, such as engine, trans, rearend, owner, builder, etc. I forget who makes the ones I saw, but I did see some very nice ones at the last Super Sunday Swap Meet I went to in Indy last Janurary. They could even be had with the specific brand logo on them. I'm planning to go to the one at the end of this month, I can check on the brand for you if you would like me to, and maybe get a website for them.

For what purpose do you want the plate: to fill the space; and/or, to use for the purpose of registration?

If you need a plate for the purpose of registration, call your DMV and or check out your state's DMV website. While it is interesting to see/hear what works in other states (it's a piece of cake in NY), if you need to register, hope that someone in your state posts a response.

The the only reproduction plate that I have seen for 1952 is for a 1/2 ton truck (it has the gross weight on it and a space for the "serial number"). This plate was sometimes used in some states for the registration ID. More commonly, it seems, the engine serial number was also used for registration ID (causing interesting problems when the engine in the truck is not the original engine). Some states used either "ID", and some states will now let you use either "ID".

yes the plate I am talking about is the one that has the GVW and engine hp, with the body/chassis number on it. Not what describes what the truck has.

And yes this is for my 52 Chevrolet 3/4 ton pickup. I already had the title switched over from the previous owners name, so it is in my name. I will need to get it registered and insured once I finish it.

The title must have been switched over to use the body/chassis id number when the previous owner swapped in the 235 as the number is not a engine id number and matches a body/chassis id for a 52 3/4 ton truck.

also classic parts of America doesn't specify that it is only for a 1/2 but other vendors do, so im just figuring its the same for the one they sell.
