Probably the same for 235's, too, but:

My dipstick tube for my 261 is non-existent and I need to make a new one. When considering the length I need to know where the oil level should be in the pan. Of course it's somewhere in between the oil pump pickup and the crankshaft, but can someone tell me exactly where it should be or how long the tube should be (from the flat of the block to the top of the tube, and the length of the dipstick)?

wouldn't it be easier to drain the engine and then add the correct amount of oil and then mark your stick. then you would be sure that its right.

That'd get me close, but I want to know just how far off the bottom of the crankshaft counter balances the oil level should be.

Can any of you guys tell me about where your dipstick says your oil level is on you six relative to the top of the oil pan?

I made some measurements a couple of years ago when I put my 1954 261 together, and (if I can read my notes) the top of the oil is about 4-7/8" below the block flange. I was not trying to make precise measurements, so I would not bet a lot on the number.

So does anyone know if the oil level is supposed to sit just out of reach of the crankshaft when the engine's off, or is it just touching, or what?
