It took FOREVER to find the good sites, including this one, that had a good source of info. So I am glad to be here. I will be posting up info and images of the rig when i get it.
That being said, thanks to this site I have come to find out that it is NOT a 1-ton... it's a 1.5. I knew the images seemed a bit out of scale to be a light duty.
So that brings me to a bit of info I am still seeking. Short of completely replacing the rear axle (which is what I expect) is there any way to drop the rear end gear ratio.

When you say "drop", does that mean you want a lower and slower (with more grunt) gear ratio, or a higher and more drive able highway cruising gear set?
A typical two speed rear end will get you an extra low range for more pulling power, but will not help achieve any better highway speed.
There are other options such as replacing the ring and pinion, but it is not cheap, and may not get you enough improvement for the dollars spent. It will most likely be more economical to switch out the entire rear axle with a newer one.

I mean lower the ratio to around a 4:10 or so. My ultimate goal it to make the '49 into a highway hauler for my track cars. I use my '05 Ford but sorry to say it's trans won't be able to take much more of it. Besides, hauling GM track cars with a blue-oval truck is blasphemous. Cliff59 I went out to the La Grave swam meet a couple weeks back and saw quite a few AD trucks. Including a 4400... Only then was I able to determine the "1-ton" I had purchased was actually a 1.5. I regular a car show out in South Garland off I-30 and Beltline at the Taco Casa.
