| | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 81 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 81 | Well since my last post at 8:50Pm I went out and installed my new glass into the sash of the new broken window, I then installed it with no problem what so ever. The problem was the glass I purchsed from American Classic Truck parts was physically too big. I laid the replacement glass I purchased from The Truck and Car shop in California and it was about 1/4" to 3/8" narower in width from front to back than the one from American Classic Truck parts. From the time I started to put the glass into the door to being finished was about an hour. It is amazing how well things go when you have the right parts. The window rolls up and down smoothly and sits snug in the channel. Thanks for the help everyone.

I've read the description of the glass installation in the Shop Manual, using oil on the tape to make it swell. Is that how they still do it? I'll be putting in a driver's side window soon and any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks for the links to the manuals. That's the reason I got my door glass made in 5mm tempered glass!  Just be very careful,laminated glass cannot handle flex like tempered can. Compare the new glass to the old one and be sure you get the channel installed on the right edge. There is a subtle differnece in width which can cause problems when you try to get it to run freely up and down in the channel. Yes, I used the rubber tape I purchased when I purchased the window. I used a carpet knife to cut the tape or silicone that was holding the broken new window in the sash, pulled that window from the sash (came right out) then installed the newer window into the same sash. It works pretty well.
When I started to reinstall the window assembly I took out all of the regulator bolts except for the one on the bottom closest to the handle. This allowed just enough room for the channel on the wing assembly to clear the regulator. And I could still roll the window up and down some.

Tempered glass will literally 'explode' unlike laminated that simply cracks. Easiest way to tell is to look at the edge of the glass. Laminated will have 3 layers (2 glass,1 interlayer) and tempered only one. Buying glass for your A.D seems to be a bit of a minefield. Quality and fit seems to vary wildly. That way theres no forcing of the window to get it in the door. The Chevrolet manual also says to have the wing window assm. unbolted. | | |
