Hi, I've got a 55' 2 ton with a 261. When I was adjusting the valves, I noticed the tube that comes straight up out of the head between the rockers was bent over and almost closed off completely. Should I replace it or was it supposed to be pinched for some reason. There was no other damage and I can't imagine how it could have happened under the valve cover if not deliberately.

I called Patrick's awhile back and they said that that was a shadetree mechanic fix from way back in the day. I guess there isn't enough oil pressure to get to the the outside rockers. By flattening the tube it helps ditribute the oil more evenly.

after reading Gardners concern over the condition of the oil tube under his rocker cover it reminded me of my high school car,a 235 54 belair, its tube had been completely pinched off by a previous owner, the car ran great and never had any problems. which brings me to the now, i have a 55 first series chevrolet 6500 with the 261, i had her running the other day with the rocker cover off to adjust the valves and noticed that some of the rockers seemed to be not getting their proper share of lubrication. the oil tube is completely open and unmodified. now maybe ive answered my own question in the first few lines of this paragraph, but is there no reason not to pinch this line off so that all the rockers get properly lubed or is there a more proper way without pinching the line? this motor has less than 2800 miles on a complete rebuild.

That's actually the way the thing is supposed to be. If you are not getting enough oil to the rockers then the tube/passage from the cam bearings up to the head is clogged.

If the thing was just rebuilt make sure the rocker shafts are the right way around. The oil holes go up.

upon checking the rocker shafts on my 261 earlier tonite, i found the rear shaft to be right side up and the front shaft to be installed upside down, someone at that machine shop didnt have both eyes open that day. thanks for the tip "4ontheFloor".
