| | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 33 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 33 | been doing a lot of body work on truck last 6 months, so truck as been down. i should be done with what i am doing next month some time, so i should be driving again, going to change oil and check points and plugs, but my question is, it has been about 2 years since i adjusted lifters on truck, should i check them, truck was running fine when i parked it, and is there a rule of thumb on how often to set solid lifters

Should ya, I spose that would depend a lot on how much it was run since it was done last done.
If it was me I'd just do it so I knew they were right, plus it's not hard to do.
Pardon me, but it seems your looking for a reason not to do it based on the fact that it runs good or I think you would have done it already.
I think the bottom line is they don't have to be off by much and the motor will still sound good, so I just check and adjust so I know valve opening is as it should be.

The recommendation in 1955 was to adjust the valves at every tune-up - 5,000 mile intervals.

If your not haveing any problems with the engine then I would go with the 5K tune up that Tim reminds us of. As things wear then the clearances grow bigger and you will notice it starting to clatter more than normal, time to adjust the valves even if your not at the 5K mark. When I did my valve job last year I was readjusting the valves every couple of months till things settled in. Next time I'll do like Pop taught me 50 years ago and reassemble the head my self, after I lap in the seats!

When I did my valve job last year I was readjusting the valves every couple of months till things settled in. In this case as the valves settle into the seats the clearances close up and you can burn a valve if your not careful. Next time I won’t be in such a hurry to get it running and I'll do like Pop taught me 50 years ago and reassemble the head my self, after I hand lap the seats!
