Hey All
I have a three on the tre transmission out of a 1954 chevy car. I bought it years ago not knowing the transmission would not bolt up to my 216 in my chevy 52 Chevy truck. I have the transmission out of my 52 truck and was looking at the gears and thought I would compare them to the car transmission. The gears from the truck transmission look just like the gears in the car transmission. Does any one know if the gears are the same? Can I put the car gears in the truck transmission housing and it work?

John,

Look through the Master Parts Catalog . It looks like some (if not all) of the gears are the same for standard duty 1953 and earlier 3-speeds.

Yes, I just did this myself and everything is the same except the output shaft. You'll have to re-use the truck output shaft because it, and the truck tailhousing, are a different length than the car tranny. If you exchange the cluster gear also you'll need to use the shaft from the car along with it because the truck transmissions use needle bearings and the automotive trannys use bushings. Also, you'll need to reuse the truck side-cover. Go for it, you won't have any problems.

As I recall, the 1954 passenger transmissions also had the needle bearings in the cluster gear. See page 409 in the Master Parts Catalog link that Tim supplied. The bushings in the 37-53 passenger cars did not last long behind a healthy 235 or 261. Our garage would always replace the earlier car transmission with a 54 when the bushings went bad, as most of the gears would be wiped out also.
